The Arts and Crafts Movement emerged in response to the effects of machine production–to the social conditions of factory workers and to the inferior quality of machine-made goods. So the impact of the Industrial Revolution on traditional skills was that many artists and designers were concerned that the decorative art was in danger of being lost forever.

The movement, which got its name from the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, a 4.795.0 cm London founded group, began to revive traditional craftsmanship.

William Morris

William Morris is a name deeply associated with the Arts & Crafts movement. Born in Essex, he studied classics in Oxford, where he met Edward Burne-Jones, another artist who shared his passion for the Middle Ages. Through Burne-Jones, Morris Dante-Gabriel Rossetti was introduced and they founded the company that became Morris & Co – the company synonymous with so many arts and crafts designs.

Morris looked into the past – especially the Middle Ages, for inspiration and for simpler production methods, and argued for returning to a manufacturing system based on small workshops.

The Art of Tapestry

Tapestry is an ancient art that dates back over 2000 years. In Britain and Europe, tapestry art was most famous in the Middle Ages. Barons and knights adorned their castle walls with them for both decoration and warmth. A tapestry is started by stretching simple warp threads on a loom to create a grid. The coloured weft threads are then woven in and out of the warp threads, creating a complete tapestry. Our production method uses modern mechanical looms that used to significantly accelerate weeks or months by hand.

A special feature of each Signare bag is that each bag is unique. Signare means “signature” in Latin and we wish every customer their own individual signature pouch.
